What is MFA?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a sign-in process that confirms your identity with:
- Something you know (your password)
- Something you have (a 6-digit code sent to your phone, or generated by an app on your device)
Even if someone else gets hold of your password, they still can't log into your account without that second code. It's one of the most effective ways to protect your information online.
Who needs MFA?
We recommend MFA for every OneFeather account. Your OneFeather account can hold sensitive information, and MFA is one of the simplest ways to keep that information safe.
This extra layer of security matters because:
- Passwords can be guessed, reused across sites, or exposed in data breaches you may not know about
- A second factor (your phone or authenticator app) is something only you have access to
- The extra few seconds it takes to enter a code is a small trade-off for keeping your data secure
A note for Nations users
If you use the OneFeather for Nations platform and enable MFA, you will be required to keep at least one method enabled to ensure your account's security.
What MFA method should I use?
OneFeather offers three MFA methods. The right one depends on your situation:
| Your situation | Recommended method |
|---|---|
| You have reliable cell service | Text (SMS) |
| You have spotty or no cell service | Authenticator app (works offline) |
| You prefer voice over text | Phone call |
| You want the most flexibility | Set up two or more methods |
A note for folks in remote areas
If your cell service is unreliable, we strongly recommend authenticator app as your primary method. An authenticator app generates codes on your device without needing any internet or cell signal, though internet is required for the initial setup.
If possible, setting up two or more methods offers you the greatest flexibility. On log in, you will be given the option to select which method you would like to use to finish logging in.
