Who is a Dependent Adult?
A Dependent Adult is an adult who may have mental and or physical limitations and depends on assistance to carry out regular activities, obtain service, as well as access and protect their rights.
If your child is living at home but is 16 or older, they are considered an adult by Indigenous Services Canada. They must apply for a SCIS with their own OneFeather account. You cannot apply for your child using your account as a parent or guardian, unless they qualify as a Dependent Adult and you have the appropriate legal documentation.
If you are 16+ and are not considered a Dependent Adult, you can learn how to sign up for one for your OneFeather account.
What is needed to apply for a Dependent Adult?
The guardian who is applying on behalf of the Dependent Adult will need an Order of Guardianship to attach to the application. This is to prove that the guardian is the legal carer and that they are eligible to apply for them. Even if you have sent this in before and nothing has been changed this is required or the application will be declined.
